feeling skeletal
would life be boring if it all made sense?

Anybody else feeling like they’re down to the bones of it all? Some weeks I’m walking on air. Other weeks (like this week), things feel a bit more skeletal if I’m being completely honest.
I think that’s one of the coolest things about being a person… we’re not exactly one-dimensional. We are in flux, in motion, and in a state of continual change. We find ways to try and ground ourselves in whatever way possible; but sometimes the gravity of life is still stronger than our best efforts, and we still find ourselves a little off balance and out of whack. Life doesn’t always make sense, and it’s not always fun, but I think that this hard truth is actually a rare form of holiness. It reminds me of one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies, Before Sunrise…
“I believe if there’s any kind of God it wouldn’t be in any of us, not you or me but just this little space in between. If there’s any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.”
It’s the attempt that makes life most interesting to me. If we had all the answers, if we knew all the secrets, and if we had it all together, would we really be satisfied? Or would we just be bored?
Maybe it’s good to feel bare-boned and broken every now and then. Maybe it’s a good reminder that we’re still human… that we still have a chance to attempt.
Here’s 7 things I think are cool and wanted to share with you:
The Academy Awards are right around the corner, so I ranked every big movie of last year.
I’ve been reading through an old medieval fable titled Reynard The Fox, and it’s grand. I can’t remember the last time I’ve read a book so dense, yet so entertaining! I highly recommend if you’re a fan of Fantastic Mr. Fox, Robin Hood, or the like!
Double dog dare you to draw terrible doodles on one sheet of paper every day this week. Here’s my work from this past week.
Baseball season is almost upon us, so I had to watch Moneyball, and man… it’s incredible. It’s one of those movies that didn’t work for me the first time, but floored me on a rewatch.
“In all I see with my two eyes, in all that hides within, in all this time I wasted wondering where the hell God’s been, a smile on your beloved face, a blue kite in the wind, God lives in ten thousand places, I see the evidence.” This song from Taylor Leonhardt is beautiful and well worth your listen.
I found this article from Substack called “They’re on My Phone Telling Me I Really Ought to Get Off My Phone” to be sobering and insightful. I really want to start mailing my subtle steadies newsletters to your physical mailbox. Imagine getting a paper copy from me in the mail each week. Lemme know if you’d be interested in this for real.
A poem from grocery list, entitled “home improvement”:
When the stones are cast your way
Breaking your soul’s windows
And beating down your confidence’s door
Patch the holes in the walls of your broken heart
Replace the pictures hanging on the walls
Those once perfect now primed promises of the past
Rip the floors of your rock bottoms
Spring clean the skeletons in your closets
And call it home improvement
